How To Photograph WRC Motor Sports: Colin McMaster Gains Speed With ProGrade Digital
WRC pushes the extremes of man and machine to the limit. Whatever the conditions—glorious or treacherous—the show must go on. I photograph this sport in the blistering sun, dust clouds, thunderstorms, gale force winds, fog, plus snow and ice. My job is to get the shots, then deliver as quickly as I can.

Rally Photographer Colin McMaster
Being around motor sports was part of growing up for Colin McMaster, a native of Belfast, Northern Ireland. His grandfather raced motorbikes, his father worked for Alfa Romeo in South Africa, and on weekends the family routinely headed to the track. As a teen, thanks to some of his grandfather’s journalism contacts, he began selling his car and driver photographs, together with short reports, to Irish newspapers and magazines.
After completing a degree in engineering at Bath University, United Kingdom, McMaster signed with the Words and Pictures (U.K.) agency and began covering lower formula circuit racing and the British Touring Car Championship. In 1997 he teamed with Reinhard Klein to found McKlein Photography. The agency specializes in World Rally Championship (WRC) capture, and maintains a rally and race archive of imagery that dates from the 1950s to today. McMaster calls Oxford home, but puts in 16 weeks per year on the road.
